Abstract

The aim of our project is to find out which fruit peel, apple, orange and banana is the most effective in filtering water. The purpose of this project is to find another way to remove contaminants from polluted water. According to our background research, we have found out that there is currently many controversies regarding the effectiveness and reliability of using fruit peels to filter water. In our experiment, we are pouring contaminated water through grinded fruit peel placed on two layers of wire mesh in a fixed amount of 10 cycles. Our results have shown that apple peels are the most effective in removing contaminants, followed by orange peels then banana peels. Specifically, apple peels are most effective in removing calcium in contaminated water. The applications include the fact that we can use fruit peels as an inexpensive method to filter water so that third world countries will have easier access to clean drinking water.
